Abstract

Objective: To evaluate aesthetic lip-chin splitting incisions for oral and oropharyngeal surgery for patients with cancer.Patients and Methods: Two different incisions were used for 46 patients and were evaluated for their aesthetic outcome. Results: The aesthetic results of the 2 different lip-chin splitting incisions were found to be excellent. Three aesthetic patterns of the lip-chin area were recognised: clear aesthetic units, good aesthetic units with the incision camouflaged by relaxed skin tension lines, and slight scarring after surgery. None of the patients developed lip vermilion notching. Conclusion: Aesthetic lip splitting incisions are an important component of treatment. Resection of malignant tumours must be performed with due consideration of the functional and aesthetic results.
