Abstract

This paper examines paintings about religious subject matter by El Greco (Domenicos Theotocopoulos) in relation to the concept of "aesthetic experience," as the term is used by Dewey (1980) and others. The works of El Greco are well-suited to a discussion of the integration of formal expression and subjective experience in visual art. This paper makes the assumption that the concept of aesthetic experience, and the relationship of form and content in art are relevant to the work of contemporary art educators and philosophers of aesthetics.
