Abstract

The anatomy of the face is influenced by sex, race and age. It is the most variable part of the human body. The increase in our knowledge about aesthetic anatomy has brought an evolution in the form of new techniques for aesthetic surgery and medical aesthetics. Our knowledge of the layers and structures of aesthetic facial anatomy is of crucial importance when performing aesthetic surgery. In aesthetic medicine, the key to success is following a proven process of patient assessment and the development of an individualized injection strategy, in addition to proper injection technique. Underlying this process it is a foundation based on an understanding of facial anatomy (bone structure, nerve and vascular system, fat pads, and muscles) and how it changes with aging, as well as how to use neuromodulators and soft tissue fillers alone, and in combination, to obtain aesthetic and natural results. Safe and effective injection relies on clear knowledge and understanding of the facial anatomy.
