Abstract

The paper aims to analyze the performance of the government to protect watersheds and river basins of the region in relation to the environmental accident resulting in 2003 by Pulp and Pa Industria Cataguases per Ltda. The study concluded the that the main governmental response actions resulted in the following: signing of the Terms of Adjustment of Conduct (TAC) which is supervised by environmental agencies and the Federal Prosecution Office (MPF) found a final allocation to the remaining environmental liabilities and promoted the recovery of degraded areas occupied by reservoirs; the establishment of the ACP culminating in the conviction of those found responsible; the creation of P2R2 designed to prevent the occurrence of accidents with hazardous chemicals. This article is a review of the literature based on findings and analysis of documents.
