Abstract

The structure and composition of H 3PO 4-anodized oxide films on Al and on 2024-Al, 6061-Al and 7075-Al alloys were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and Auger electron spectroscopy. The anodic film thickness in these alloys was measured as a function of the anodization voltage and the anodization time. Effects of pre-anodization etching by Oakite, FPL, and HNO 3/HF etches on the composition in unanodized specimens and on the composition and anodization rates in anodized samples were also investigated. In 2024-Al specimens either etched by Oakite or anodized at 10 V for ≈ 60 s, Cu segregates to the oxide-metal interface. The size and orientation of anodic film pores were characterized by scanning transmission electron microscopy.
