Abstract
The development of hypersonic vehicles requires a large volume of high-quality heat-transfer data which will be primarily used to validate codes. In addition, tests must be conducted to demonstrate the survivability of materials/structures in the extreme thermal environment of hypersonic flight. The methodology relating these tests and the techniques available to the experimentalist need to be clearly understood. This paper provides a brief survey of the methodology, typical facilities, and the aerothermal test techniques that have been used in the U.S. to develop hypersonic vehicles.
