Abstract
In Reply.— I agree with Dr. Chmelik that long-term evaluation of patients receiving aerosolized steroids is needed, but surely, potential local side effects are greatly outweighed by the known systemic toxicity produced by orally administered steroids, the only available alternative for patients with severe asthma. Aerosolized steroids, particularly beclomethasone, have now been used for more than two years, their efficacy and freedom from serious toxicity have been amply substantiated in the medical literature, and they should be made available for patients in the United States, as they are in most other parts of the world.
