Abstract
A new compilation of magnetic data from France with the French continental shelf and Portugal allows the delineation of the geodynamic features of the Variscan domain of Western Europe. Specific techniques, such as the use of shadowgrams, provide a better definition of the Variscan structures in France, especially of those below the Mesozoic basins and offshore on the western continental shelf. In addition, hypotheses on the extension of the western part of the Variscan arc may be considered. Comparison of the magnetic trends, using a Permian palaeogeographic reconstruction, suggests new constraints on the interpretation of the Ibero-Armorican arc and hitherto unknown relations hips between the main Variscan faults and sutures defined in Europe and their possible extensions into North America.
