Abstract
This paper deals with the improved aerodynamic properties of flat triangular sails. Flat sails provide a cost advantage compared to airfoil shaped jib sails that are assembled from curved panels. A flat sail be given good aerodynamic properties with a suitable sheeting arrangement, involving the use of a stiff turning boom. One sail-boom configuration was tested in a wind tunnel. The lift-drag properties of the sail are presented with visual data on the shape and flow behaviour.
