Abstract

Introduction: Aerococcus urinae is a gram-positive coccus, that grows in pairs and clusters, produces alpha-hemolysis on blood agar, and is negative for catalase and pyrrolidonyl aminopeptidase. Aerococcus urinae (AU) was first described as a pathogen in 1989, when it was implicated in urinary tract infections. AU is a very uncommon pathogen, among reported cases it is most frequently associated with urinary tract infections. However, there are case reports of AU causing more serious infections, including bacteremia and endocarditis. In our case, AU lead to septicemia, a probable endocarditis and ultimately death in a long term care patient.
