Abstract

In the era before the adoption of mass annual vaccination by countries on conti nental Europe in the mid-1960's, there were many occasions when F M D spread to the United Kingdom and Scandinavia. Frequently, such spread was preceded by the appearance of outbreaks on the nearby continent and often there was no history of contact linking outbreaks separated by seaways. Over the years, several authorities have attributed these episodes of unexplained distant spread to the carriage of virus on the wind (12, 13, 24, 25).
