Abstract

Rationale Allergy to Mesquite - Prosopis juliflora (Sw) DC. pollen is reported worldwide, however, no report is available so far in Chennai, India. Hence a study on aerobiology and allergenic potential of Mesquite pollen was studied. Methods Daily monitoring of the atmospheric presence of the pollen of Mesquite was studied using Vertical Cylinder Trap installed at 5 different spots in Chennai at the height of 15 meters and the study was conducted for a period of 12 months. The antigenic potential of the pollen was studied through skin prick test conducted on the patients reporting respiratory allergy. Results Altogether 2706 pollen of Mesquite was recorded averaging 541 pollen in a site. It was recorded throughout the year registering the peak during February to May. During rainy season the count was recorded at low level (October to November). Among the 131 subjects studied for the allergenicity nearly 9.16% of the subject showed positive reactions. Conclusions The pollen of Mesquite in Chennai is buoyant, present in significant amount and possess allergenic property which is significant medically. Thus, the inclusion of the allergen of Mesquite in diagnosis of allergy is recommended.
