Abstract
It has been generally postulated that primary amoebic meningoencephalitis in man caused by the free-living amoeba, Naegleria aerobia (see chapters 3 and 4), is due to the entry of trophozoites through the intranasal route during swimming or bathing in fresh water. Therefore, it is not appreciated that soil is an ideal habitat for small free-living aerobic amoebae to exist in large numbers in active (trophic) form. From soil these amoebae spread to other sites.
