Abstract

To the Editor.— The report in your LETTERS section by Chen et al1in the Feb 1 issue is of interest, but the observation is neither new nor unique. The fact that intestinal ischemia produces a clinical picture mimicking adynamic (paralytic) ileus has been known to surgeons for years. In the first edition of theManual of Surgical Therapeutics,2we described the features of intestinal ischemia and mesenteric infarction presenting clinically as paralytic ileus. We termed this clinical situation vascular ileus, but I believe neither the appellation nor the description originated with us.
