Abstract

The characteristic phenomenon for the 90's Russia was the crisis of ethnic identity, which caused a surge of ethnopolitical mobilization. This manifested in the form of a reassessment of the Russian history events and the actualization of ethnocentric ideas. For some reason, these processes were especially acute in the North Caucasus. Our study will focus on Adygea, Kabardino-Balkaria and Karachaevo-Cherkessia as the regions where the Circassian ethnic group predominantly resides. In this article, an attempt to analyze the socio-cultural and political factors of the Circassian identity transformation in the 1990s is made.
