Abstract

Abstract The popular theater of West Bengal known as Jatra derives from devotional forms of performance going back a few centuries. In the nineteenth century, the form contributed to India's emerging independence movement, and Jatra became a significant voice for social concerns in the twentieth century. The bibek—a narrator/character who performs as a conscience—contributed to Jatra's effectiveness in advocating for social issues.
