Abstract

Mental health advocates are mourning the passing of Ed Knight, Ph.D., a longtime advocate in mental health who was recognized nationally for his contributions to the recovery and peer support movements. Although Knight passed away at 69 last April, advocates say they only recently learned about his death. Knight was a vice president of consumer affairs at ValueOptions. In 2005, he received the Chairperson's Award from the United States Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association. “He was my mentor,” Harvey Rosenthal, executive director of the New York Association for Psychiatric Rehabilitation Services, told MHW. He changed the conversation regarding the consumer and recovery movement, said Rosenthal. “He touched a lot of lives,” he said. “As long as there's recovery and peer support, his legacy will be there.” Sandy Forquer Dranfield, Ph.D., retired, and formerly senior vice president for government affairs at OptumHealth, said Knight influenced her approach to behavioral health services in managed care. He supported the creation of 70 self‐help groups in Colorado, she said. “He taught me about recovery and to walk the walk,” she said.
