Abstract
Abstract Health professionals are required to engage in advocacy in a variety of ways, and this chapter allows one to explore what goes into advocacy work, where it happens, and how to identify and understand when they are engaged in advocacy efforts. The framework in this chapter includes terminology and a foundational understanding of the settings health professionals advocate within and how to know the first steps and processes to start. The chapter also introduces key stakeholders, agencies, and organizations that become instrumental in this advocacy work. Advocates must first familiarize themselves with the common lexicon used by their colleagues, policymakers, and partner or opposition organizations. A strong grasp of the language around advocacy will allow health advocates to better maneuver the various roles, challenges, and professional responsibilities of this skill.
