© 2008, AWHONN 197 nNurses and the patients they care for are affected each and every day by public policies and lawmakers. It’s an inescapable fact that a nurse’s livelihood is linked to the federal government—the largest underwriter of health care, professional education, public awareness and research. It has the capacity to infl uence the supply and demand for nurses, their compensation and their ability to practice optimally. But it’s a two-way street. Nurses can and should infl uence policy makers to do the right things. It’s not only a civic obligation to do so but also a professional duty if nurses truly serve as their patients’ best advocates. And one of the best ways to make an impact is to meet with members of Congress in Their local offi ces.
