Abstract

International travel provides many rewards for the traveller, not least of which is the exposure to new cultures and ideas. It is important that the health professional tries to assure travellers’ health by careful pre-travel medical preparation that balances risk assessment of travellers and their trip with attention to health promotion. Health promotion should focus on the areas of safety, responsible personal behaviour, prevention of vaccine-preventable illness, vector avoidance and malaria chemoprophylaxis, and prevention and treatment of travellers’ diarrhoea.
