Abstract

Objective: Clinicians have begun using several mood stabilizers for treating agitation in older patients, but limited information is available relative to side effects and costs in clinical practice. To address this issue, medication-related adverse events and their costs were reviewed in a group of older nursing home patients receiving divalproex or lithium. Subjects and Methods: 72 subjects were identified as having received one of the mood stabilizers for at least several months during some point between 1994 and 1997, were age 55 years or older, and who resided in the skilled nursing facility at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Long Beach, California.
