Abstract

The shorter poems of the medieval centuries express feelings also found in stories, which like so much else in English first begin to be written down in the thirteenth century. Of uncertain date, but one of the best, is King Horn (1,650 lines), written in a spare formulaic style reminiscent of the ballads.
