Abstract

The advantages of phase measurement of acoustic waves over amplitude measurement by the optical probing technique are discussed. Phase measurement has the advantages of less variation due to external disturbance, specification of the direction of energy flow, and possibility of more precise calculation of the standing wave ratio. Measurement results of distributions of the amplitude and the phase of surface acoustic waves confirm these advantages.
