Abstract
Palliative medicine is increasingly playing a role in the emergency department, yet emergency medicine (EM) residents are generally not educated in this area. Standard curricula for EM residents include caring for critically ill patients utilizing resuscitative protocols and disease-directed therapies. But caring for dying or terminally ill patients compassionately involves an entire breadth of knowledge outside from what is currently being taught. Palliative medicine is patient-centered care that includes symptom relief near and at the end-of-life.
