Abstract

Funding for the symposium was provided by NIH Fogarty International Center-Grant number D43TW008330, under the Wits Non-Communicable Disease Research Leadership Training Program.

Highlights

  • The prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) is increasing globally and is currently the leading cause of death and disease burden worldwide

  • NCDs include cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes, kidney disease and mental health disorders. These diseases were regarded as diseases of high-income countries or as affecting only the wealthy and the elderly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and little attention was given to NCD research in LMICs, including Ghana
