Abstract
Currently, the Internet of Things (IoT) is employed to establish connections among smart things as well as between smart things and individuals. It is used in various applications for smart cities. However, the IoT has several drawbacks, such as a lack of common standards, which would be required if as many things as possible are to be connected. The Web of Things (WoT) (i.e., the IoT extended using Web standards) possesses common standards and has many other advantages over the IoT. This article elaborates on both approaches, compares them, and summarizes the potential uses of the WoT in cognitive cities. With the WoT, processes in cognitive cities can be simplified and living standards improved. Thus, the WoT is suitable for addressing the challenges faced by today’s cities.
