Abstract

Chemical looping combustion (CLC) is a potential pathway to capture generated CO2 from the combustion of carbonaceous fuels. Since Victoria, Australia still relies mostly on Victorian brown coal (VBC) for power generation, this thesis has attempted to advance the CLC of VBC from laboratory-scale to industry-scale operation. Studying different process parameters, this thesis assessed the suitability of iron based oxygen carriers and found hematite as a potential option for large scale operations. Also, through a process simulation and detailed techno-economic study of a of 550 MWe plant, this thesis concluded that CLC of VBC is commercially viable.
