Abstract
Abstract Chemical conditioning of rail running surface to overcome the effects of oil films is capable of producing a definite increase in locomotive adhesion. Extensive tests under operating conditions for more than a year have demonstrated its practicability and economy. Characteristics necessary to permit a chemical formulation to qualify for commercial use have been determined and a practical method of application developed. The ultimate objective of application from the locomotive, as is done with sand, is being sought.
