Abstract
With the increase of population and the development of industry and agriculture, the problem of environmental contamination is getting critical. It is estimated that the annual economic losses caused solely by water contamination in China amount to 5 billion US dollars. Besides, natural disasters frequently occur in China. The annual direct economic losses brought about by geological hazards average 1.15 billion US dollars. Table 1 lists losses caused by some main types of geological hazards.
