Abstract

It is widely believed that activation of hepatic stellate cells(HSC), imbalance of extracellular matrix synthesis and degradation are the primary factors resulting in liver fibrosis, among which, the activation and proliferation of HSC are the key link. Therefore, suppression of the HSC activation becomes a key to control the liver fibrosis. At present, the anti-fibrotic measures include inhibiting proliferation or inducing apoptosis on HSC, down-regulating collagen production or promoting its degradation, administrating cytokines, infusion of mesenchymal stem cells. In this review, we summarize the latest advances of the mechanisms of HSC activation and possible anti-fibrotic therapeutic strategies. Therefore, early prevention and treatment of liver fibrosis has an important clinical significance. Key words: Hepatic stellate cells; Liver fibrosis; Mechanism ; Treatment
