Abstract

The development of proportional counters for the detection of soft X rays in space has led to some advances in the design and performance of these counters. The energy resolution of proportional counters at soft X-ray wavelengths is discussed. Sealed plastic windowed counters are described and their deterioration with storage, and recovery treatment, investigated. The effect of high count rate operation on counter gas gain is examined and the design of large area counters discussed, together with the problem of background reduction. Data on the performance of a small volume counter for use with a grazing incidence `X-ray telescope' are presented.
