Abstract

This monograph presents the many important advances which have been made in the field of rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease in the past 20 years. It has been written as a supplement to, not a revision of, the former monograph, Rheumatic Fever, which covered the period 1916-1940, by the same author. Thus the material presented is the culmination of a 40-year period of observations on care and follow-up of patients with rheumatic fever. The book is divided into four sections: (I) epidemiology of rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease; (II) nature of rheumatic fever, current concepts; (III) diagnosis and course of rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease, and (IV) management of rheumatic patients. Each section presents an excellent review of the major contributions made to the particular field of interest under discussion and includes the author's observations and interpretations based on her long experience and exhaustive studies in the
