Abstract

This booklet, an editorial collaboration between the Custom Publishing Office at the journal Science and top researchers at the Beijing Institute of Basic Medical Sciences in China, provides scientists around the globe with a window into some of the fascinating research being carried out in the area of high-altitude medicine and hypoxic physiology, using the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau as a test bed. Brief reviews in an array of different areas of study are presented, together highlighting the many advances that have been made in the understanding, treatment, and prevention of high-altitude sickness. An array of studies are under way attempting to elucidate the underlying mechanism for high-altitude illnesses and thereby development suitable treatments. What researchers learn will have implications for the health and well-being of all high-altitude populations.
