Abstract
A combination of the properties of liquid and solid propellants into single propellant is possible by the gelation of liquid propellants. In gelation, gelling agents are mixed in conventional liquid propellants to transform them into semi-solid propellants. Viscosity of gel propellants can be regulated by altering the level of shear. Gel propellants could then exhibit all favorable features of solid propellants during static conditions (very low shear) and behave just like liquid propellants during deployment in atomization and combustion stages (high to very high shear). This chapter describes advances in combustion technology for the gel propellants. Important elements of formulation, flow characterization, atomization, and combustion are discussed with the help of relevant results.
