Abstract
The American College of Chest Physicians annually sponsors a series of postgraduate conferences. From the information presented in Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, New York, and Philadelphia in 1961 eighteen representative lectures were chosen and are made available in this volume. The book is intended to fill a gap between the teaching clinician and the doctor interested in scientific progress as it applies to daily practice. Dr. Hurley L. Motley wrote the first chapter entitled Oxygen Transport or Transfer in the Lung. He makes the point that hypoxemia is caused by uneven ventilation in relation to blood flow in most patients with chronic lung disease. The patient exhibiting a pure diffusion defect is rare.
