Abstract

This year's review of behavior therapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) highlights recent advances in treatment of anxiety disorders, depression, marital distress, chronic pain, and nicotine addiction. In anxiety disorders and depression, behavioral therapy and CBT are increasingly being evaluated in combination with or in comparison to pharmacotherapy. Follow up of 1-2 years or longer in many of the studies cited provides important information about long-term efficacy of behavioral and cognitive-behavioral interventions. In some cases it is already bringing about significant changes in the way the interventions have traditionally been used.
