Abstract

ObjectiveTo explore compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue, measured by 2 subscales of burnout and secondary traumatic stress among advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) subspecialties. MethodA cross-sectional descriptive design was used to measure 3 subscales: compassion satisfaction, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress. ResultsParticipant scores indicated average compassion satisfaction, average burnout, and low secondary traumatic stress. Differences in mean scores and prevalence in the 3 subscales among participating APRN demographics, characteristics, and subspecialties were observed. ConclusionObservable differences may indicate APRNs and some APRN subspecialties are at higher or lower risk for compassion satisfaction, burnout, and/or secondary traumatic stress.
