Abstract
The Cydia pomonella granulovirus (CpGV) is deployed worldwide in commercial (organic) apple orchards to control the pest codling moth ( Cydia pomonella). Due to its strong UV sensitiveness and its low uptake the encapsulation of the untreated CpGV within an organic matrix together with admixed UV protectants and phago-stimulants is needed. The Particles from Gas Saturated Solutions (PGSS) process was further developed in order to meet the requirements for the encapsulation of the CpGV with respect to temperature sensitivity and environmental compatibility. The produced virus-loaded microcapsules are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), laser diffraction, and UV spectroscopy. Finally, the efficiency and sprayability of the encapsulated CpGV formulation as biological plant protection agent were successfully verified in laboratory bioassays.
