Abstract

This chapter starts with the need for advanced machining processes (AMPs) in different fields. Then it classifies the AMPs into three classes, as mechanical (abrasive jet machining, ultrasonic machining, abrasive water jet machining, and water jet machining), thermal (electric discharge machining, laser beam machining, electron beam machining, plasma arc machining, and ion beam machining), and electrochemical and chemical machining including biochemical machining processes. The basic working principles of these three classes of AMPs are discussed in brief without going into the science behind them, which is discussed in different chapters. Then, the definition of micromachining is introduced and the applications of each AMP in micromachining are discussed in brief but sufficient references are given for further studies.
