Abstract

In recent years considerable advances have been made in the application of signal analysis techniques to the detection, diagnosis, and trend analysis of incipient faults in operating machines. Many of these have been based on Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) analysis, most often involving simple frequency analysis, and it is astonishing how much information can sometimes be gained from a simple frequency analysis. However, them are situations where frequency analysis alone (or time signal analysis alone) does not enhance those features of the signal that characterize the fault to be diagnosed, and it is then that the techniques discussed in this paper (Cepstrum analysis and Hilbert transform techniques) may be useful.
