Abstract
High voltage alternating current (HVAC) gas-insulated transmission lines (GILs) have been successfully used as an alternative solution to overhead lines and cables for more than 40 years. GIL can be laid directly buried, in a passable or non-passable tunnel or on a gantry. GIL solutions offer different advantages, such as high current-carrying capacity, low losses and low charging current. Predictably, mainly due to these advantages, GIL technology will be rapidly developed in the near future. As a consequence, the most important issues regarding the insulation system which includes the insulating gas and the insulators inside GILs, have become key problems in restraining the development of HVDC and HVAC GILs.
