Abstract

The second edition of Advanced Critical Care Nursing has been a highly anticipated update of the previous edition edited by the late Karen Carlson. Good and Kirkwood, who were section editors for the original version, have stepped in as editors of this second edition. The intended audience of this book is the experienced nurse at the bedside or in an advanced practice role. The goals of this update were to reflect additional evidence that has guided changes in practice and to recognize these changes in the practice environment.Advanced Critical Care Nursing opens with a unit covering both the environment of care and the implementation of the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) Healthy Work Environment standards. The format of the second edition is similar to the first edition; content is divided into units (eg, Advanced Dysrhythmias, Acute Coronary Syndrome, Heart Failure). Each unit is then divided into chapters based on the content explained in the unit.Although no individual book can cover all the potential problems for patients who are acutely or critically ill, this book provides a good overview using a systems approach. The editors have worked with the authors to present anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology in an application format; building on the framework of foundational knowledge expected of the acute and critical care practitioner. Chapter authors provide the expertise in their respective fields to ensure the content is as up to date as possible.Multiple figures and tables support the content and many chapters have a case study at the conclusion, with decision point questions to assist in understanding the application of the content. Discussion of pharmacologic interventions is included. Each chapter is also well referenced, providing existing evidence to support current practice recommendations.Advanced Critical Care Nursing is not a textbook; however, it could be used to supplement classroom learning at the advanced level. It should be a sought-after reference for those wishing to function in or teach advanced acute and critical care nursing practice. The goal of this book’s learning experience is to synthesize and apply information rather than merely learning facts or data out of context.Advanced Critical Care Nursing is available in print and as an eBook. Sample pages can be reviewed online, including the Table of Contents, giving the buyer a chance to get an idea of the content that is covered in this book. Professional books are not inexpensive, but this book will be a valued addition to your library in whatever format you choose.
