Abstract

Different designs of air conditioning systems for railway transport with the use of only environmentally safe natural working substances (air and water) are investigated relative to energy efficiency in the case of not only arid but also humid climates. A compound design of an air conditioning system consisting of an expander in front of which a humidifier is additionally mounded, with the water in the humidifier being fed from the supply tank of the railway coach, is proposed. Calculations demonstrate that the maximally allowable pressure behind the expander as well as the temperature difference in the heat exchanger may be increased through humidification of the auxiliary flow in front of the expander. In turn, this makes it possible to reduce the power consumption and overall dimensions of the air conditioning system by decreasing the required surface area of the regenerative heat exchanger.
