Abstract
Advanced composite materials, as distinct from conventional GRP, have been used to construct high performance raceboats and marine craft for a number of years, and these materials have come to dominate the market for racing sailboats, to the virtual exclusion of all other forms of construction. Also, their use in advanced composite powerboat projects has shown that advanced composite construction compares very favourably with conventional structures for weight, cost, impact strength and stiffness. This paper reviews developments in the industry which have led to the building of numbers of large, high performance, advanced composite sail and powerboat hulls. In particular, developments in materials technology, manufacturing methods, structural configurations, design methods and quality assurance are discussed in detail. Advanced composites have the potential to improved most large high performance structures, and the necessary technology is proven and available as a basis for developing a wide range of very large, advanced composite structures.
