Abstract

Recent moves by UK government towards the increased use of community or home-based care is largely based on adding technology to the care intervention, i.e. through telecare, telehealth and telemedicine (Department of Health, 2005). The tele-technologies all remotely augment delivery of care. Currently, telecare primarily identifies social or health events that require a rapid response, whereas telehealth delivers some health monitoring and/or intervention in the home. Telemedicine involves inter-professional-or professional-to-patient services. The role of assistive technology (AT) for anyone with reduced functional capabilities is also recognized (Audit Commission, 2003). Assistive technologies are any products that assist a user to achieve tasks that current functional incapacity would otherwise make impossible, difficult or dangerous.
