Abstract
The analysis of the cost responsibility and the cost cause in the production process shows that design departments are responsible for up to 70% of the production costs. A large potential of savings can be made if the interface between design and assembly planning would be more efficient. The planner needs a tool which allows him to plan and simulate the real assembly under real production circumstances. The technique of VR is the ideal basis for spatial assembly and disassembly planning of products. This means different assembly and disassembly possibilities can be compared and tested in a virtual world. The Fraunhofer-Institute for Industrial Engineering (IAO) is developing a planning system which uses this feature in order to carry out assembly planning, maintenance planning and disassembly operations. This contribution reports on ongoing research activities, focusing on an innovative assembly planning system using virtual reality techniques and on industrial research projects in which disassembly systems are planned. Furthermore it is aimed to integrate VR also in disassembly systems.
