Abstract

Surface finishing is the principal operation carried out by a majority of manufacturing industries. To achieve nano-level finish, advanced finishing processes are required. Most commonly used advanced processes are abrasive flow machining (AFM), magnetorheological finishing (MRF), and magnetorheological abrasive flow finishing (MRAFF) processes. The AFM process has large applications, but the major problem is uncontrollability over the abrading forces. This problem is overcome by MRF and MRAFF processes. The AFM, MRF, and MRAFF processes can be combined with conventional finishing processes to obtain Angstrom-level finish with significant improvements in material removal rate. This chapter addresses the current status of advanced abrasive-based nano-finishing processes along with their operating parameters.
