Abstract

A 57-year-old woman without significant medical history presented to the emergency department with right lower quadrant pain. Vital signs were blood pressure of 144/86 mm Hg, pulse rate of 89 beats/min, and temperature of 36.5 °C (97.7 °F). On examination, there was isolated tenderness without peritoneal signs. Ultrasound demonstrated a cystic mass with layering debris within the appendix (Figure 1), and computed tomography displayed a dilated fluid-filled structure without inflammatory changes (Figure 2).
