Abstract

A 28 years woman was admitted with a two-day history of generalised headache. She also complained of neck stiffness and high temperatures. Lumbar puncture was performed which showed evidence of varicella zoster DNA. She had no characteristic dermatological involvement prior to or even during the course of her illness. MRI scan showed evidence of encephalitis. She was successfully treated with intravenous aciclovir for 14 days, following which she improved. Diagnosis of varicella zoster meningoencephalitis without dermatological involvement was made and is rarely reported in an immunocompetent adult. This case emphasises the need to consider this entity in the differential diagnosis of meningoencephalitis cases and initiate treatment accordingly.
