Abstract
After a long period of communist misrule and economic mismanagement, the countries of Central and Eastern Europe and their people are facing the challenge of political, social, economic and cultural renewal. Adult education can and needs to play an important role in this crucial process. Currently, adult education and adult educators are in a difficult situation but there are also signs of hope and vitality. I provide an overview of the societal and individual adult education needs, the current situation in various parts of the field, and future prospects. I also deal with the need for sensitive assistance from abroad to help our colleagues there accomplish their difficult task.
